Soho Square dates back to 1670.  The statue is King Charles II.

"Soho square....a great resting place after the madness of Oxford Street"

Soho Square is a small, square park located in the trendy area of Soho. Originally named Kings Square after King Charles II, it is world renowned as the address of London's most prestigious media organisations and houses film, television and sport companies such as 20th Century Fox, Bloomsbury Publishing, Paul McCartney (MPL), Relevant Picture Company and the Football Association - just to name a few. Needless to say, Soho Square, and its surroundings, is great for a little bit of star spotting! And, so the story goes, the name changed to Soho Square in the early 18th century because the Duke of Monmouth, who lived in the square, apparently made a point of shouting out ´So Hoooo´ when going hunting or heading into battle.

"hard to believe its been here over 350 years"

This beautiful little square, with a garden area in the centre, is surrounded by many businesses and lots of fab bars, clubs, restaurants and shops to play in! And with Beak Street, Dean Street, Frith Street, Greek Street, Old Compton Street and Wardour Street all nearby, there is certainly no shortage of all things naughty and nice!

The Edge, located on Soho Square is a very well known, and big, gay bar. It is very entertaining, has great music and serves tasty food and good beer.

The Admiral Duncan can be found on the city's best known gay strip, Old Compton Street. The Admiral is one of London's most loved gay pubs as it is cosy, great for a relaxing beer and the jukebox is very cool.

Built on the site of the Duke of Monmouth's home is the Dog & Duck pub. It is a great little watering hole if flashy bars aren't your thing.

Sharing the same building as the Soho theatre is Cafe Lazeez on Dean Street. A chain of Indian restaurants with a contemporary twist, the food is great as is the buzzing atmosphere. To be guaranteed a great meal at an affordable price, try Pierre Victoire located on Dean Street. Another chain of restaurants but the French cooking is delightful, the wine list is excellent and you'll leave satisfied with change in your wallet.

There are of course many other restaurants, cafes and bars in streets and lanes surrounding Soho Square, and the choice is often difficult, but rest assured you will definitely find somewhere special that tickles your fancy.

"Kirsty MacColl: her memorial bench is in Soho Square"

Soho Square itself is also home to a memorial bench in memory of the late Kirsty MacColl who wrote and sang a lovely song about the area, rightly named ´Soho Square´. This particular song, from her album Titanic Days, is very special to her family and fans and her songs were played as the Bench was unveiled during a public ceremony.

When the sun is shining on a weekday, Soho Square is full of local businessmen and women lolling on the grass eating their lunch in the sun. It is a great place to relax in the middle of the hustle and bustle of nearby Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road. Enjoy! Most people do.

"Soho hotels are usually quite hip"

Hotels around Soho Square have sprung up in recent years due to the influx of media companies opening offices in the area.  They tend to be trendy and upmarket.  It must be said that this is a very central area to base yourself in and should be considered seriously if you like hip areas.  The adult orientated entertianment area to the south is probably best avoided if you have impressionable younger teenages.

Getting to Soho Square is easiest from Tottenham Court Road station if you are coming on the tube, but you can also get out at Oxford Circus underground station and stroll down from there or Leicester Square station and walk up Charing Cross Road.
