The Clink Prison in Southwark. Museum and historical site.

Lying just below the River Thames near to Charing Cross, Southwark is one of the oldest parts of London. It connects to The City of London via London Bridge and its surrounds are austere and steeped in history.

Archaeologists have found evidence of pre-historic activity in the area and it was established in Roman times, but Southwark has seen many exciting events through the ages.

Initially valued in the Domesday Book at £16 for the land (if only it was still such a bargain...), Southwark has since emerged from three fires, including the Great Fire of London; The Tabard pub in the area is mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as the spot where the protagonists begin their journey; it was the site of The Rose and The Globe theatres where Britain's immortal bard Shakespeare and his contemporary Christopher Marlowe staged their work; Southwark was a popular area for bear-baiting and prostitution; it was depicted as the epicentre of bawdiness, drunkenness and lewdness in William Hogarth's etching of the Southwark Fair, which may be the reason why it also had a high concentration of prisons such as The Clink, which is now a fascinating yet grim museum; and it was the unlikely home of the Harvard family, whom the famed American University is named after.

Despite its past flirtations with debauchery and decadence, Southwark is now a very upmarket and desirable place to live, with very high property prices, although there are few in the area and it is mostly businesses that inhabit the mix of ancient and modern buildings around the area.

Southwark is home to many of London's most beloved sights and attractions and as such is usually thronging with crowds, so tends to be avoided by the locals on weekends.

However, if you are willing to brave the hordes, you will find enough to keep you busy for days, even if you just want to get an especially good view across the Thames. If you want to see some of the more historic areas of The Borough, as the area is known colloquially, you can visit Southwark Cathedral, which has stunning Gothic architecture and holds choral concerts throughout the year.

Just beyond the Cathedral is Borough Market, one of London's most enticing places to pick up goodies. From gooey raclette sandwiches, to fresh prawns, to pates, wines and enormous brownies, this is a must see for anyone who appreciates the finer things in life and a great place to pick up supplies for a makeshift picnic along the Thames, if you ask nicely, the shopkeepers will even give you plastic knives and forks or cups.

It has become a meeting ground for London's innovative young food scientists and London's long-established produce suppliers, so you will find some surprises among the traditional market fare.

If you want to get a glimpse of London's debauched past, you can visit The Clink Prison, where the guides will happily demonstrate how 'the stocks' work. London Dungeon is perhaps less historically accurate but provides more thrills and shocks than The Clink, especially since it installed a particularly terrifying ride, worth a visit for spooky, silly fun in the guise of history.

The Rose Theatre may be long gone, but the new Globe Theatre is very popular with tourists and locals alike, showing fantastic Shakespeare productions and ones penned by new playwrights whom the Bard might have approved of.

The Theatre has been rebuilt as it was in Shakespeare's day, with hard wooden seats, a standing area and the option to hire a cushion for the duration, particularly handy if you're watching Hamlet. The theatre also has a great shop and museum, where you can see the handwriting of the great bard himself.

Southwark's architecture is somewhat eclectic and mixes the contemporary with the modern to a sometimes jarring affect, much to the chagrin of local residents, however as London is an evolving city, the newer buildings have now been embraced and City Hall, London's mayoral seat, affectionately nicknamed 'The Headlight' after its curious appearance and newer addition The Shard, a building which rises high above the traditional houses in the area, are imposing but welcome landmarks.

Southwark enjoys good transport links to the rest of London, with Borough and London Bridge tube stations on the Bank branch of the Northern line, from which you can access other parts of East London and King's Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminus is located and Southwark Underground Station on the Jubilee line, from which you are just two stops away from Waterloo.

This is a fantastic area to stay, close to major London sites in a picturesque and historic area, which has lots of quiet little streets, but enjoys a very buzzy vibe at night, with many great pubs in the area. Unfortunately, because this is such a popular area, it is one of the more expensive places to stay, but there are some cheap hotels in nearby Waterloo, Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle, from which you can walk to the area.
