St Giles Cripplegate church is located on Fore Street EC2 within the Barbican complex, behind London Wall EC2. St Giles Cripplegate stands on the site of an 11th century Saxon church and was rebuilt in 1390 and again between 1545-1545 after fire damage. The church, which survived the Great Fire of London, was severely damaged in World War Two and recreated to the original 1545 plans. One of the few medieval churches remaining in London, St Giles Cripplegate was the location where Oliver Cromwell married and John Milton is buried in the grounds here.
St Giles Cripplegate was rebuilt between 1952-1960 and became the parish church of the Barbican development, built around Beech Street EC2 and Silk Street EC2. The main building of the Barbican is located 100m north of St Giles Cripplegate and houses 3 cinemas, 2 theatres and a number of shops. The exclusive Searcy's restaurant, which provides contemporary British dishes made from the finest ingredients, is located within the Barbican, as well as the Waterside Cafe, situated next to the Barbican's own lake, opposite the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
St Giles Cripplegate stands next to many places of interest within the City of London, such as the Guildhall, located 400m south-east on Gresham Street EC2. The Guildhall, home of the Corporation of London, boasts an impressive Grand Hall, decorated in an elaborate style with monuments to key figures in British history such as the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and Admiral Viscount Nelson. The Guildhall is also home to the impressive Guildhall Art Gallery, the Guildhall Library, Guildhall Clock Museum and the St Lawrence Jewry church, official place of worship of the Lord Mayor of London.
St Giles Cripplegate stands 100m south-east of the Museum of London, located at 150 London Wall EC2. The Museum of London, which is open daily, provides an insight into the history of the City of London, with interactive displays and seasonal exhibitions on topics from prehistoric times to the present day. St Paul's Cathedral is another major attraction located close to St Giles Cripplegate, situated 600m south-west on Ludgate Hill EC4 and St Paul's Churchyard EC4. St Paul's Cathedral, one of the iconic images of London, is open for visitors and has been delicately restored in time for its 300th anniversary in 2008.
St Giles Cripplegate is positioned close to excellent bus, National Rail and London Underground services, due to its location at the northern end of the City of London. Barbican Underground Station, which provides Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan line services to stations such as Liverpool Street and Aldgate, is located 400m north-west of St Giles Cripplegate. Moorgate Station, which stands on Moorgate EC2 and Moorfields EC2, is situated 300m east of St Giles Cripplegate and provides National Rail and London Underground services across 4 lines.
