Historically, the area was part of a huge Royal Park, along with Green Park and St James's Park. In the 1660s, Charles II gave Henry Jermyn, 1st Earl of St Albans, the right to develop the land with aristocratic residences in a grid of streets around St James's Square.
Until the Second World War, St James's remained one of the finest residential enclaves in London. Famous buildings there include St James's Palace, Clarence House, Marlborough House, Lancaster House, Spencer House, Schomberg House and Bridgewater House. It is still one of the wealthiest parts of London with fine houses, exclusive hotels and corporate offices, including the global headquarters of BP. Christie's auction house can be found in King Street and there are many upmarket art and antique dealers close by. The Royal Academy of Art lies on Piccadilly.

The area is also home to fine wine merchants including Berry Brothers and Rudd, at number 3 St James's Street. Adjoining St James's Street is Jermyn Street, famous for fine tailoring.
St James’s Park, which lies at the southernmost tip of the St. James's area, is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London. Buckingham Palace is just to the west of the park. The Mall and St James's Palace lie to the North, Horse Guards is to the east and Birdcage Walk is on the south. The park has a small lake with two islands, West Island and Duck Island. Duck Island includes a resident colony of pelicans, which has been a popular sight in the park since the first gift of the birds from a Russian ambassador in 1664. A bridge across the lake offers views Buckingham Palace framed by trees and fountains. The park is part of a chain of green spaces made up of Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.
