"Hotels in St John's Wood, NW8 Central London"
Surrounded by the lush greenery of Regent's Park and Maida Vale, St John's Wood is a very exclusive district, home to London's wealthier citizens, which was ranked the 5th most expensive postcode in the UK, where property prices reach into the millions. Once owned by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, it is now a magnet for celebrities and moneyed artistic types, such as Lily Allen, Ewan MacGregor, Kate Moss, The Rolling Stone Keith Richards and Paul McCartney, who all own homes in the area. Like much of London, the area was developed in the 19th century, but due to a 'low density' housing policy it wasn't overrun with factories or tenements and is a very picturesque area, with many Victorian residences still intact.
A rather posh area requires a rather upper class sport, so it is no surprise that St John's Wood is home to Lord's Cricket Ground, the home of Middlesex County cricket club and Marylebone Cricket Club. A very popular venue, which gets crowded on match days and the spiritual home of the sport; it is a great place to crack open a bottle of champagne, nibble on a cucumber sandwich and relax whilst watching a test match.
The area's proximity to Regent's Park means that even if you don't fancy watching men in white shin pads yell 'Howzat!’ you can still enjoy London's great outdoors, weather pending of course. Regent's Park is just a ten-minute walk away from St John's Wood and it is the perfect place to relax with a picnic or go for a stroll through the lush greenery.
The park also host's outdoor theatre and concerts and it is the home of London Zoo, a vast and intriguing ecological centre, which focuses on education as well hosting talks and events. Zoo lates, where you can visit the park after hours and buy drinks from a temporary bar, is very popular.
St John's Wood is also where Abbey Road Studios was located, where the Beatles recorded the Abbey Road album and posed for the famous picture of them walking over a zebra crossing. Countless tourists attempt to reconstruct this iconic image when visiting the area, much to the chagrin of local drivers, who are held up whilst everyone gets in shot. It is possibly the most famous crossing point in the world, and has even been granted listed status, so tourists will have photo opportunities for a while yet.
St John's Wood is also home to some very exclusive shops and restaurants, including artisan food shops such as GAIL's and Panzers, designer clothing and elegant cafes such as Richoux and Sofra Bistro, so you can enjoy an overpriced cup of tea and keep an eye out for any celebrities stopping for lunch.
St John's Wood is also well located for transport, with a tube station that services the Jubilee line to many areas of central London, including Waterloo, where you can catch overground trains outside of the city. Hotels in St John's Wood are few and far between, and those that are there are very expensive. It is worth looking at Swiss Cottage, a pleasant part of North London, for alternative accommodation, or Camden, where you may be able to find some decent low-cost hotels.
