St Mary's Hospital sits in the Paddington district of London; located close to the newly revamped wharf area. Founded in 1845, it is housed in an exquisite, ornate, redbrick building and was one of the many voluntary health services to be founded at the time, when London was rife with poverty and disease. The hospital also operates as a medical educational institution, firstly when it merged with Imperial College London in 1988, and now it operates as part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, offering free healthcare, making it an impressive medical resource and it also receives bonuses from the NHS for successful operations, so you can be sure you'll be in good hands!
The hospital has pioneered the use of keyhole robotic surgery, including the UK's first Da Vinci robot for keyhole surgery, which has helped to treat conditions efficiently and with much better accuracy and has allowed medical teams to perform previously frustrated feats. The hospital also houses the Jefferiss Wing sexual health clinic, which is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for the treatment of HIV and AIDS. The hospital also specializes in pediatric care, and has a dedicated A&E department. As one of London's leading medical centres, whatever you require, from audiology and hearing services to vascular surgery, you can be sure there will be someone to help.
St Mary's is notable for its discoveries of the drug heroin, which was synthesized by Charles Romley Alder Wright, and on the more socially beneficial side, Penicillin, which was discovered by Alexander Fleming in a cramped laboratory in 1928. The mold, which would go on to revolutionize medicine around the world, was discovered by accident, when Fleming left some samples stacked together and noticed something strange growing on them. St Mary's Hospital has restored Fleming's laboratory and it is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.
The hospital is also notable for their noted researchers, including Joseph Toynbee, an otologist; Albert Neuberger, a professor of chemical pathology; and Augustus Waller, whose work led to the invention of the electro-cardiogram. Famed alumni of the hospital include Roger Bannister, the first man to run a four-minute mile, and several famous personalities have been born at the hospital, including actor Kiefer Sutherland, singer Elvis Costello, and several royals, such as Princes William and Harry, Zara Phillips and Lord Frederick Windsor. A royal patronage is usually a sign of excellence, so if you are taken ill in London, St Mary's is a good choice for treatment.
If you are visiting a relative at hospital or you are receiving care and need to stay close by, Paddington has many reasonably priced hotels to choose from. The Orchard Hotel offers cosy, traditionally styled rooms for low-cost rates. The Belmont & Astoria Hotel offers charming rooms and a complimentary breakfast. The 4-star Quality Crown Hyde Park offers a touch of traditional glamour and The Royal Park Hotel offers exquisite antique furnishings for a more luxurious stay.
