One of London's finest hotels, the Savoy located on the Strand.

"Strand hotels are so handy for Covent Garden, Theatreland and Trafalgar Square"

The Strand is one of London's main thoroughfares. Located in Westminster, it runs for three and a quarter miles, starting from Trafalgar Square and ending near Fleet Street, unofficially marking the boundaries of the City of London, the oldest part of London. It was used as an important trading road in Roman times and in Mediaeval times it was the principal route between the City of London and the Palace of Westminster.

Many important palaces and mansion houses lined the street, most of which have now been demolished and turned into arcades, hotels and business headquarters.  These include Somerset House, which still stands and has an open air ice rink each winter; Savoy Palace, on which site a London institution, The Savoy Hotel, now stands; Cecil House, which is now The Strand Palace Hotel; and Hungerford House, which is now Charing Cross Rail Station.

Although most of these are gone, you can still see some historic sites on the area. After the mansion houses were destroyed, the area fell into disrepute, so it seems fitting that the street contains The Dog and Duck Tavern, where conspirators in The Gunpowder Plot met. It is one of London's recurrent peculiarities and a sign of the city's ever-shifting landscape that areas which were once considered to be little more than dens for roustabouts and prostitutes have since evolved into one of the most refined and beloved areas of the city, however the Victorians, with their strict moral codes did have a hand in creating The Strand as it is today, a lively, bustling street filled with elegant theatres and a thriving cultural centre.

This is largely due to famous residents such as Thomas Carlyle, William Makepiece Thackeray and Ralph Waldo Emerson, who gave the area an artistic air, which resounds in nearby Covent Garden. This led to the area becoming London's Theatreland district and there is a high concentration of venues which still exist, such as The Adelphi and The Lyceum, where you can watch musicals, comedies, cabarets, dance performances and dramas, making this a great place to visit for tourists who want to soak up the culture of the city.

The Strand is also well placed to visit the exhibition centres on the South Bank, such as The Royal Festival Hall, and of course, Trafalgar Square where you will find Nelson's column, the ever changing Fourth Plinth and the extensive art collections at The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.

The Strand has several unique shops along its length, including a Hotel Chocolat and a shop dedicated to British TV series Dr Who, but its proximity to Covent Garden, just a few minutes walk away, makes it fantastic for shopping enthusiasts.

Covent Garden contains many independent, designer and high street boutiques as well as market stalls selling artisan goods and there are some bijou eateries catering for all budgets in the area. Along The Strand itself, restaurants do tend to be chains or expensive, but hidden gems like Salieri's, which is decked out like a props cupboard exploded, and Thai Square, which offers very tasty Thai food in erroneously traditional British surroundings, make it worth exploring. There are also some fantastic old pubs on and near The Strand, including Gordon's wine bar and The Lyceum Tavern, both of which offer very cosy surroundings and a wealth of history.

The Strand's main station is Charing Cross, where you can catch overground trains to other parts of the UK, or catch the Northern and Bakerloo lines of the Underground. From the Bakerloo line, you have a direct link to Paddington Station, where you can catch the Express Train to Heathrow in 15 minutes, and you can easily reach many other areas of London.

Most hotels in the strand area of london are 4 and 5 star and cater for celebrities and royalty as well as the general public, they tend to be expensive, however, you can find some reasonable rooms along The Strand, although if you are on a tight budget, you may want to check out the low-cost tourist class hotels in nearby Elephant and Castle or Waterloo, which are just a few tube stops away.

Usually, the cheapest hotel around the area of The Strand is the Strand Palace.
