If you subscribe to the idea that 'anyone' could make modern art and find it baffling and pretentious, then of the two Tate galleries in London, the Tate Britain is for you. Of course, the Tate modern's more straight-laced cousin has its fair share of modern pieces too, but abstraction has all been shifted from Millbank to Bankside, leaving mostly Old Masters and practiced style.
The gallery was built on the site of a former prison in 1897 and was designed in a classical style, to suit the worthy works displayed inside, the portico and dome were designed by Sidney R. J. Smith and the elegant sculpture hall, which greets you, was designed by John Russell Pope, and has been used for everything from film projections, to sculpture display and even an installation involving relay runners racing back and forth, which lasted for several months. The gallery was the first of the four Tate galleries in the country, named after its founder Sir Henry Tate, a sugar merchant, and the founder of Tate & Lyle sugar.
The gallery is dedicated to the display of British art only, and maintains this tenet today, albeit loosely, as a recent Picasso exhibition, which focused on the artist's influence on British art, featured a few of the Spaniard's drawings. The gallery's collection is truly impressive, with an extensive collection of J.M.W. Turner's work and a large collection of stunning Pre-Raphaelite pieces. Seminal works on show include Ophelia by John Everett Millais, The Golden Bough by Turner, Beata Beatrix by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion by Francis Bacon and Recumbent Figure by Henry Moore. All these pieces are in the permanent collection, however the gallery also holds a fascinating programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, on subjects such as Immigration, the Romantic poets, Family in the UK and special workshops for visitors with disabilities.
Tate Britain also hosts hugely popular Late at Tate events, where you can enjoy the art after hours with a glass of wine from the temporary bar. The events also feature directional music and special installations in the main hall. The gallery also has a fantastic, well-stocked shop and a cafe with a stunning mural by artist Rex Whistler, so you can immerse yourself in culture then enjoy a coffee and pick up a souvenir.
The Tate Gallery is one of London's foremost galleries and well worth a visit during your trip. If you wish to stay nearby in the peaceful surrounds of Pimlico, you will be well placed to visit many other central London sights. Dolphin House offers low-cost accommodation close to Victoria Station. The Melbourne House Hotel offers modern accommodation at affordable rates in a very convenient location. The Lidos Hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the Tate Gallery and the Carlton Hotel will help you save whilst putting you in the heart of the Victoria district.
