It's hard to believe that one of Britain's foremost modern art galleries only existed since 2000, before which the collection was shown alongside the classical pieces in Tate Britain. It was a stroke of genius to separate the occasionally baffling modern works from the traditional paintings and sculptures, so that purists who decry modern artwork as self-indulgent nonsense can avoid it altogether. It has proved to be a popular move and Tate Britain's cooler cousin now has over 4.7 million visitors a year and is currently undergoing an expansion, which will see more galleries, studios and entertainment areas.

The gallery certainly looks the part. Whilst the Tate Britain gallery is housed in a typically ornate Victorian building, the Tate Modern is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station, and later re-imagined by architects Herzog and De Meuron, who turned the structure into the brutally elegant showroom it is today. Herzog and De Meuron decided to turn the Turbine Hall into the main gallery area, a huge, imposing space where many of the gallery's most talked about exhibitions are held. The conversion has contributed to the regeneration of the Bankside area of London and has made property in the surrounding areas very expensive as well as becoming a landmark in its own right. The museum's five galleries house an extensive collection of art from 1900 to modern day, moving through various movements and styles, from constructivism and Dadaism to Pop Art and digital art. Work is arranged in themes rather than chronological order. It contains work by some of the most renowned artists in the world, from Pierre Bonnard and Rene Magritte to Joseph Beuys and Anish Kapoor; the collection includes the crème de la crème of the international art scene.

The Tate Modern may have its detractors and it has often courted controversy. It was at the Tate Modern that Ai Weiwei's porcelain seeds were found to emit harmful dust, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's infamous sculpture of the Pope being hit by a meteor was displayed to much criticism and Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth piece, a 30 foot crack in the floor of the Turbine Hall gallery, caused patrons to trip and injure themselves. Despite these setbacks, the work at the Tate Modern is always intriguing and often inspiring, from Louise Bourgeois's giant spider sculptures, to Carson Holler's slide, to Olafur Eliasson's weather project, where visitors could bask under an artificial sun in the Turbine Hall, the Tate aims to push the boundaries of participatory art and educate their visitors with a fantastic range of seasonal exhibitions. They also have a special gallery for kids to create their own artwork, a gift shop that sells more interesting souvenirs than your usual rubbers and pencil sharpeners and a programme of events and talks, which are very well attended. So even if you view Marcel Duchamp's famous ready-made Urinal as a piece of trash, it will be worth your while coming to see it and the vast amount of work on show might just win you over.
