The Gatwick Express

The Gatwick ExpressThe Gatwick Express is a fast train that runs straight from London Gatwick Airport to London Victoria station. It leaves every fifteen minutes, and the journey time is roughly half an hour. Although it is significantly more expensive than the regular suburban trains, it offers more space, better storage from luggage, and it gets you to London much faster.

The Gatwick Express runs from platforms 1 and 2 at Gatwick Airport train station. The station itself is located at the South Terminal. If you have arrived via the South Terminal then you can find the train station by coming into the main concourse after you clear customs and bearing left, following the signs to the station around by the bureaus de change. If you have arrived at North Terminal then you will need to take the monorail between the two terminals, and follow the signs to the train station when you arrive at South Terminal.

If you are arriving by train and need to get to departures at Gatwick you should come onto platforms 1 and 2, do up the escalator, and follow the signs, which will take you into the main concourse of South Terminal. If you take a hard left out of the station you will find yourself at the check in desks.

Tickets can be booked online which ends up as a slightly cheaper option, or they can be bought at the station. The service is run by Southern railways, and takes you into London Victoria station. Victoria is the main station serving the south coast, and it is just next to Kensington, St James, and Pimlico. From Victoria you can continue your journey by the District, Circle or Victoria lines on the London Underground, by intercity coach from Victoria Coach Station, or by London bus.

The Gatwick Express was designed with the air traveller in mind, and it aims to make it as easy as possible for people to get from central London to the airport, or vice versa. The dedicated Gatwick Express notice board in Victoria station not only contains details of all of the Gatwick Express services, but also of flights from Gatwick, so that you can check to see if your flight is subject to any delays before even leaving London.

The Gatwick Express has a first class service which also offers complimentary newspapers, large reclining seats which come with tables, and a refreshment service that comes right to your seat. Many of the staff on the service are multilingual, and they are specially trained to greet visitors.

The Gatwick Express travels 1.6 million miles every year, carrying 13,000 people every day, and it is the fastest and most convenient way to get from Victoria to Gatwick. That said, however, the ordinary trains, the suburban services, will only take about fifteen minutes longer, and, if you are not going at peak time can be just as comfortable. However, if the greater convenience and speed are worth the extra money to you, then the Gatwick Express is the train for you.
