Situated in north London, in between Finchley and Kilburn, West Hampstead lies north of the very exclusive Maida Vale district. The area is very upmarket and largely residential, with a laid back, buzzy nightlife scene. West Hampstead's peaceful surrounds, good transport links and proximity to Camden and Hampstead make it a great place to stay when visiting London. The area was only developed in the late 19th century and previously it was a village called West End. Unlike some areas of north London, the area wasn't blighted with industrial factories and warehouses and was primarily used for residential houses, so it retains a village-y feel today, with elegant late-Victorian town houses lining the streets.
The area's charm has attracted several celebrities, so you can do some star spotting whilst exploring the area. Actress Emma Thompson, guitarist Slash from Guns N' Roses and singer Chaka Khan are just some of the eclectic bunch of luminaries who own property in the area. As such the area has a reputation as an artistic enclave and it is close to several renowned galleries, including Kingsgate Gallery, which exhibits fine art and Camden Arts Centre, an elegant modern structure where you can see cutting edge art by modern and past contemporary artists.
The Freud Museum, dedicated to the father of modern psychiatry and left much as it was in his day is just a 20 minute walk from the area and The Tricycle Theatre is just a short walk away, which mostly showcases political plays for a highbrow audience. Slightly further away, in Hampstead, you will also find The New End Theatre and The Everyman Cinema Club, which is a favourite arthouse cinema with celebrities who live nearby. From West Hampstead you can also enjoy a pleasant stroll to Hampstead Heath, where you can use the sporting facilities, or just enjoy stunning panoramic views of London.
West End Lane has a great selection of quirky independent shops to explore, selling clothing, produce and craft equipment for a discerning clientele. There is also a great selection of restaurants in the area, such as Nautilus for upmarket fish and chips and Basilico for pizza and pasta. There are also some chain restaurants for those who are sticking to a budget. Pubs in the area are also cosy and welcoming, such as the historic Holly Bush, which was built in 1643 and The Horseshoe, which has its own microbrewery.
West Hampstead enjoys very good transport links, with an overground rail service that runs all the way to Richmond or Hampstead Heath, Hackney and Stratford in the other direction, for Westfield shopping centre and the Olympics site. It also has an underground station on the Jubilee line, from which you can travel to central London in ten minutes and Waterloo rail station for travel to the suburbs and beyond.
