Hotels in West Kensington London
West Kensington is situated just beyond Earls Court and just before Hammersmith as you head out of central London. Not quite as stylish or refined as Kensington proper, it has a certain charm of its own, with a mixture of modern buildings and 19th century red brick pubs and houses, it bears more similarities to Earls Court and shares the bohemian vibe found there. Like many areas further afield from central London, the area has an ethnically diverse community due to waves of immigration after World War II.
Cheap house prices and a good location for traveling into central London mean that the area has become an intriguing mix of Arabic, Irish, American and Australian immigrants alongside many international students who attend schools in the local area which teach in their native language and large educational establishments such as the Lycee Francais, Imperial College London and Central London Universities.
Whilst this means that the area is a bit of a mixed bag, with social housing and exquisite town houses mingling in close quarters, this gives the area a laid back artistic ambience and has significantly contributed towards the many wonderful restaurants and pubs to be found nearby, which offer flavours from around the world.
Middle Eastern, Pan-Asian, Turkish, Chinese, Italian and British can all be found in a variety of cosy gastropubs, chic restaurants and take aways, alongside chain restaurants for those on a budget. If you want to see live music, the area is close to two historic venues, the O2 Shepherd's Bush Academy and The Troubadour, which have seen acts such as Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan strut their stuff and nowadays show a great mix of up and coming bands and established acts.
The area's charm has attracted many celebrities throughout the years and Freddie Mercury, Edward Burne-Jones, Gustav Holst and singer Estelle have all lived here at one point. The area is also famed for the Queen's Club at Barons Court, a huge sporting complex, which was used as the venue for the 1908 Olympics and it used to be the site where the Lawn Tennis Association held championships.
West Kensington is a very convenient location for those attending or exhibiting at Earls Court or Olympia exhibition centres, where shows and exhibitions such as the London International Horse Show and The Doctor Who Experience are held throughout the year. West Kensington also offers a wide range of cheap accommodation, due to the many visiting students, travellers on a budget will feel at home and although the quality of the accommodation does vary, it is often an attractive mix of great location and affordable rates.
You will also find great transport links here to South Kensington, where you can find London's museum district, Hyde Park and the Royal Albert Hall; High Street Kensington, where Kensington Palace is located; and Sloane Square via the District Line, so it is well placed to visit London sights and attractions such as The Victoria & Albert Museum and the King's Road shops. Barons Court tube station also provides a direct link to Heathrow Airport via the Piccadilly Line.
