The Westbury Hotel in the Kensington district of London, close to Earl's Court exhibition centre, where visitors can see large-scale concerts and exhibitions such as The Ideal Home Exhibition, is housed in a genteel 19th century building, typical of the area, and is situated in a quiet, largely residential area. This doesn't mean there is nothing to do, as some of London's main attractions are just a short walk away in South Kensington, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, which is dedicated to exquisite arts and crafts around the world; The Science Museum, for an insightful and interactive look at scientific phenomena and history; and The Natural History Museum, where you can enjoy hands-on exhibitions about earthquakes, bugs, dinosaurs and much more in a stunning building dubbed 'the cathedral of nature'.
The hotel itself offers rooms for up to five people, catering for business and leisure travellers alike. The decor is tasteful if a little outdated, with comfortable beds; a calm colour palette and a good range of amenities, providing all the basics you will need throughout your stay, including en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, a colour TV, telephone, radio alarm and hair dryer. The hotel also has a lift, making it accessible for those with mobility difficulties and the staff are very friendly and informative, welcoming guests with a quick tour of the local area. The hotel serves a simple continental breakfast, which is adequate but with a limited choice, so some guests may wish to head to Prêt A Manger or Starbucks nearby. The hotel also has a free Wi-Fi connection, a real plus as some of the higher graded hotels in the area charge for this service.
The hotel does not cater for evening meals, but there are plenty of great restaurants nearby, many of which offer authentic food, which reflects the ethnic diversity of Earl's Court's community. Chain restaurants such as Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Pizza Express offer reliable, reasonable fare and Mr Wing and Masala Zone offer culinary delights from China and India respectively.
The hotel is also close to some fantastic London sights and attractions. Nearby you will find The Troubadour Cafe, where Paul Weller, Jimi Hendrix and many more have played throughout the years; The Finborough Theatre, where new playwrights ply their wares; and Olympia Exhibition Centre is just a tube stop away, where you can watch Crufts Dog Show and The Royal Tournament. A ten minute walk to the east will bring you to Kensington High Street, with its exclusive range of shops and bars, culminating in Kensington Palace and Gardens, where you can tour the former home of Princess Diana, whose dresses are still on exhibition there and whose memorial fountain you can see in the surrounding gardens. Hyde Park is also nearby offering a wide range of outdoor activities for the summer months and The Serpentine Gallery, which has a fantastic collection of modern art and an annual, artist-designed Pavilion.
Transport links form The Westbury are also good, with Earls Court tube station just a few minutes walk away, from which you can travel on the District and Piccadilly lines. The District line will take you to Paddington Station for the Heathrow Express train, or you can access Heathrow directly via the Piccadilly line. You also have a direct link to King's Cross St Pancras Station where the Eurostar terminus is located.
The Westbury appears to be very popular with previous guests, who have needed reasonable accommodation for a short stay. It may not be ideal for a special break, but its stunning location and comfortable rooms; it's a very good choice for the area. Light sleepers staying at the hotel should request a room near the back, which tends to be quieter.
