Westminster Abbey

"In the floor of Westminster Abbey you can see a small stone which marks the burial place of the poet Ben Jonson. Ben was too poor to pay for the a usual grave space, so he is buried upright"

Westminster is one of London's most recognisable districts, filled with iconic sights, which are fodder for many of the city's tackiest souvenirs, such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and London's most revered church Westminster Abbey. The Abbey has been a feature of London for over 1,000 years, making it one of the most historic landmarks you can visit.

The Abbey was first established by Benedictine monks in the 10th century and became the official site for coronations in 1066, when William the Conqueror was crowned, and the church as we know it today was begun by Henry III in 1245. Although it has been altered much over the years, its Gothic core still remains to this day and visitors can see how the Abbey has been built up throughout the ages, and view the Anglo-Saxon shrine of Edward the Confessor.

The Abbey has an extensive collection of artistic altarpieces, brasses dating as far back as 1277, wall paintings from the 13th century onwards and the exquisite Cosmati pavement built in 1245; and the Abbey's architectural features are unique, such as The Lady Chapel, the highest Gothic vault in the UK, St Edward's Chapel, the Victorian stained glass rose window and a plethora of tombs designed by renowned artists. 17 monarchs are buried in the Abbey and many noted persons are memorialised, including poets Ted Hughes and John Keats, Martin Luther King Jr, and writers Rudyard Kipling and Oscar Wilde.

The Abbey has also been the site of 16 Royal Weddings, most notably Prince Charles and Princess Diana's fairytale 1984 wedding (Princess Diana later had her funeral at the Abbey after her untimely death), and her son Prince William to Kate Middleton in more recent years. Unfortunately it is hard to get hold of tickets to these grand events, but visitors can tour the Abbey every day of the week except Sunday, when it is only open for worship, as it still operates as a working church. There is a small fee to visit, but this is one of London's must see buildings, whether you're a history buff or otherwise, Highlights of the Abbey include St Catherine's Chapel Garden, Chapter House, Pyx Chamber (one of the oldest parts of the Abbey) and Poets Corner, where memorials to the UK's literary greats are buried, including Charles Dickens and Geoffrey Chaucer, who was the first poet to be buried here.

If you're lucky you may arrive in time for a concert by the famed Choir of Westminster Abbey, and if you are visiting with children, activities and events, such as brass rubbing craft workshops are held on a regular basis. So if you want to discover more about the kings, queens, statesmen, soldiers, poets, priests and heroes and villains of London's past, there is no better place to see. Westminster is also a great place to stay, as it is central to London's major sights and attractions. The Royal Horseguards Hotel offers grandeur and opulence in a stunning historic building, close to the Abbey and Park Plaza County Hall in Southwark offers stylish modern rooms for the cosmopolitan traveller. Novotel London Waterloo offers reliable service and comfortable rooms close to the South Bank exhibition centres and Grange Rochester Hotel offers old-world class close to Victoria Station where the Gatwick Express terminates.

If you wish to stay in the area, there are many shops, restaurants and tourist attractions nearby, but it should be noted that hotels in the area can be expensive. St Ermin's Hotel is a five minute walk away on Caxton street and offers guests quintessential English style, with a mix of traditional fixtures and bright contemporary touches. The Royal Horseguards Hotel offers very luxurious fittings, fantastic views of the Thames and a very central location near to the London Eye and The Houses of Parliament, but the price reflects the prestige of the locale. For budget travellers, a good option is The Wellington Hotel, located about 20 minutes walk from the Abbey, which offers a very reasonable rate for a comfortable, well-appointed room. On the south bank of the river, a good mid-range option is the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, about 10 minutes walk from the Abbey, with sleek contemporary decor.
