"An essential visit when in the Kensington area"
The Kensington district of London is a retail enthusiast's dream, with a wide selection of designer and high street shops, including many unique, artisan shops where you will find gifts and souvenirs you won't find anywhere else in London. If you want to find all your shops under one handy roof, the Barker's Shopping Arcade is where you should head. Originally Barkers department store until the 1970s, the arcade still has a great range of clothing outlets. With stores such as Warehouse, Monsoon, Accessorize, Arrogant Cat and Karen Millen, you'll be outfitted to fit in with Kensington's classiest residents.
Perhaps the biggest attraction in the Barker's arcade is, without a doubt, the enormous Whole Foods market, an American chain and the first, fully organic superstore in the UK. This is a supermarket unlike any other, filled with the most luxurious and healthiest produce around. The store may lack the traditional elegance, royal standards and opulent decor of Fortnum & Mason food hall in nearby Mayfair, but with slightly cheaper prices and a slightly less elite approach to food, Whole Foods is one of the best places to lunch in the area.
The store offers dozens of regional cheeses in a unique (and rather pungent) cheese room; enormous cupcakes; delicate macaroons; an extensive range of wines and spirits; a downstairs market full of fresh, organic vegetables (cherry picked by the store chefs to ensure they won't go to waste); huge self serve dishes full of scrumptious lunch options; and a wide selection of gourmet sandwiches and salads.
When you buy food from the store, you can be sure that you are contributing to a green and ethical company. Whole Foods sources all its products from local farms, composts its waste and ensures that only sustainable seafood is stocked. The store also has an award winning range of vegan cakes and snacks, so no matter what your dietary requirements are, you can find a delicious treat. Above the shop is a cafe with a good selection of food at very reasonable prices for the area and cookery courses, tastings and demonstrations are offered for the curious.
If you love to indulge in a spot of shopping and would like to sample some of Whole Foods' very tasty wares, there are plenty of reasonable accommodation options nearby so you can save your money for a new outfit or a slice of cake. A decent hotel near the Whole Foods Store is the Kensington Close Hotel is just a few minutes walk away and offers guests very comfortable rooms and a high standard of service. The Copthorne Tara Hotel won't break the bank, but will provide you with a good night's sleep in a cosy room. If you can afford to splash out, the 5 star luxury Milestone Hotel in an exquisite Victorian building, just a few minutes from the arcade, offers elegant baroque furnishings, a great restaurant and top quality service at top prices.
Barkers Arcade is easily reached by tube, so it is extremely well placed for transport within central London and further afield. High Street Kensington tube station is just a few minutes walk away. The station services the District and Circle lines, from which you have a direct link to Victoria Station (where the Gatwick Express Train terminates); Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express Train terminates); and many other areas of central London. So you can extend your shopping spree throughout Kensington and beyond.
