Search for cheap hotels near Wimbledon Stadium
Greyhound racing was first practiced in 1876 in Hendon, north west London and until recently, with the closure of Walthamstow Dog Track, having a 'flutter' on the dogs became a quintessentially cockney pastime, monitored by lovable dodgy geezers running illegal gambling brackets. Unfortunately, Walthamstow was the last official Dog Track to close its doors in the East of London, but Wimbledon Dog Track is still going strong as the largest and most successful dog track in the country. Greyhound racing in the east of the city may have attracted a colourful mix of characters, but Wimbledon is a much more professional affair, which attracts all types of Londoners, with a glass fronted air conditioned stadium, a world away from the overcrowded, grimy centres of the past.
"Revel in the camaraderie"
Every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, those who are feeling lucky head down to Wimbledon to down a few pints and place a few Tote bets on the dogs that look the most promising. Wimbledon Stadium offers punters the choice of a reserved private table for the evening, where waiters will come to take their bets, or you can sit in the 8,000 strong stands and revel in the camaraderie mass betting can entail. It may just be a bunch of hounds running after a slightly dog-eared looking rabbit (if you'll excuse the pun), but its a thrilling way to spend an evening and a harmless bit of gambling fun, where you could actually leave with considerably more than you arrived with!
"English Greyhound Derby"
Wimbledon Stadium is also host to the delightfully British sounding 'English Greyhound Derby', which takes place each year and is the most prestigious event on the greyhound-racing calendar. Greyhound racing is surprisingly popular in the UK, with stadiums throughout the country and pari-mutuel betting, which is worth over £75 million a year. Over 3 million Brits attend a series of 5,750 meets throughout the year and when you account for the extra revenue brought in by food, drink and merchandise, then you start to see how dog racing means big bucks. However, if dog racing isn't quite your thing, Wimbledon Stadium also hosts stock car racing and speedway events.
"England's largest tennis tournaments"
Wimbledon is a very pleasant area of southwest London, where England's largest tennis tournaments are held annually and plenty of gastropubs, restaurants and shops can be found. Wimbledon is also well known for its theatres and it has fantastic links into London via the overground train service and the tube station, which operates on the District line. Hotels in the area aren't as plentiful as in central London, but there are a few catering to various budgets. The Holiday Inn Express Wimbledon is a 3-star hotel with reasonable rates close to Colliers Wood Station. The 4-star Antoinette Hotel has garnered good reviews and offers a lively buzzy atmosphere in the public areas. Cannizaro House is a very grand hotel housed in a Georgian mansion, where period features abound and rooms are luxurious, and for something a little cosier, the Wimbledon Hotel is a low-cost, stylish B&B with funky decor in each room.
